This is the working checklist our crews use during the rough cleaning phase of post-construction projects. It covers every area of a typical residential or commercial build. Use this as a quality control tool to ensure nothing is missed.
โ ๏ธ Safety First
Before beginning rough cleaning, conduct a site safety walk. Verify that all energized circuits are labeled, scaffolding is stable, floor openings are covered or barricaded, and all crew members have appropriate PPE (hard hats, safety glasses, dust masks, steel-toe boots, gloves).
General Site โ All Areas
- โ Pick up and dispose of all loose debris: lumber scraps, drywall cutoffs, pipe/wire cutoffs
- โ Collect and dispose of all fasteners: nails, screws, staples, brad nails (use magnetic sweeper on floors)
- โ Remove all packaging materials: cardboard, plastic wrap, foam, styrofoam, banding
- โ Remove all food containers, drink containers, and personal trash left by trades
- โ Sweep all floors with industrial push broom
- โ HEPA-vacuum all floors after sweeping (critical for fine drywall dust)
- โ Scrape drywall mud/compound drips from all floor surfaces
- โ Scrape drywall mud from window sills and door frames
- โ Wipe down all window sills and ledges
- โ Remove window stickers, labels, and manufacturer tags
- โ Check for and remove any protruding nails or screws from framing
HVAC System
- โ Clear all debris from HVAC register openings
- โ Cover all register openings with cardboard or approved covers to prevent further contamination
- โ Verify return air openings are sealed or covered
- โ Remove any visible drywall dust from exposed ductwork
- โ Ensure HVAC system is NOT running during drywall dust removal (prevents duct contamination)
- โ If system has been running during construction, note for final clean team (filters will need replacement)
Kitchen Area
- โ Remove all packing materials from cabinets (if installed at this stage)
- โ Sweep and vacuum cabinet interiors
- โ Remove drywall dust from countertop areas (if installed)
- โ Clear sink area of debris and plumbing waste
- โ Sweep and vacuum all floor areas including under work tables and sawhorses
- โ Wipe down windowsills
- โ Remove any adhesive residue from countertops
Bathrooms
- โ Remove all plumbing waste: pipe cutoffs, solder drips, flux residue, Teflon tape scraps
- โ Remove drywall dust and mud from tub/shower fixtures (if installed)
- โ Clean out tub/shower basins of debris (do NOT use tub as a dump โ if trades have, clean thoroughly)
- โ Sweep and vacuum floors
- โ Wipe down vanity areas
- โ Clear drain openings of any debris or construction waste
- โ Remove protective coverings from fixtures if they're dirty or falling off (replace with fresh protection)
Bedrooms & Living Areas
- โ Remove all debris from floors, closets, and window areas
- โ Sweep and HEPA-vacuum all floors
- โ Scrape drywall mud from windowsills, door frames, and floors
- โ Wipe down all windowsills and ledges
- โ Remove window stickers and labels
- โ Wipe down closet shelving if installed
- โ Clear closet floors of debris
Stairways & Hallways
- โ Remove all debris from stairs, landings, and railings
- โ Sweep stair treads (careful not to damage if finished treads are installed)
- โ Vacuum stair treads and risers
- โ Wipe down handrails and balusters if installed
- โ Ensure adequate lighting for safety (replace burned-out work lights)
- โ Remove trip hazards: cords, debris, tools left by trades
Garage & Utility Areas
- โ Remove all bulk construction waste: lumber, drywall sheets, insulation rolls, packaging
- โ Sweep and shovel garage floor clean
- โ Organize or remove any remaining building materials
- โ Clear water heater area of debris
- โ Clear electrical panel area (maintain 36" clearance per NEC code)
- โ Clean up around furnace/air handler area
- โ Remove trash from dumpster area, organize dumpster staging
Exterior (If Applicable)
- โ Pick up debris around building perimeter: cutoffs, packaging, fasteners
- โ Clear entryways of tripping hazards
- โ Sweep porches, stoops, and covered entries
- โ Remove window stickers from exterior glass (if accessible from ground)
- โ Organize material staging areas
- โ Clear access paths for remaining trades
Waste Disposal
- โ Separate hazardous materials: adhesives, solvents, paint cans, caulk tubes
- โ Separate recyclable materials: clean cardboard, metal scraps, plastic packaging
- โ Load general construction waste into dumpster
- โ Do NOT mix drywall waste with general waste (some jurisdictions require separate disposal)
- โ Document any hazardous materials found (asbestos in renovation projects, lead paint)
- โ Verify dumpster is not overfilled (material should not extend above dumpster walls)
Quality Check Before Leaving
- โ Walk entire site with flashlight โ check corners, closets, behind doors
- โ Run hand across several surfaces โ if white dust appears, re-vacuum those areas
- โ Verify HVAC registers are covered and sealed
- โ Verify all floor surfaces are clean enough for next trade (painting, flooring, etc.)
- โ Photograph completed work for documentation
- โ Notify GC/superintendent that rough clean is complete and site is ready
